Fox William Mulder was born in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts in October of 1961. He was raised by Teena and Bill Mulder, who he believed to be his biological father throughout most of the series. He discovered his actual father was CGB Spender, aka Cigarette Smoking Man, towards the end of the original nine-series run.

Fox had a younger sister, Samantha. The driving force behind his pursuit of the X-Files was his belief that she was abducted by aliens in November 1973, when she was just eight years old, and he was twelve. His opinion about what actually happened to her changes numerous times throughout the series, and it’s not until the episode entitled “Closure” that he finds out what really happened to her.

He studied at Oxford University, England before joining the FBI in October 1984, aged just 23. Whilst at the FBI academy in Quantico, he earned himself the nickname, “Spooky.” Over the years, he worked in the Behavioural Science Unit, and the Violent Crimes Unit before discovering the X-Files; cases that often go unsolved, and have a paranormal, or unusual element to them. Mulder initially worked on these cases with fellow Special Agent Diana Fowley, who subsequently left to pursue her career elsewhere.

It was in 1992 that, in order to try and “debunk” Mulder’s work, he was assigned a partner in the form of Special Agent, and Medical Doctor, Dana Scully. Not swayed by her rational thinking, or scientific explanations, Mulder continued to pursue his beliefs of alien abductions and government conspiracies, risking his life and Scully’s numerous times in the process.
